calmer songs ✿
music that doesn't fry both of you.
the opposite of baby shark / cocomelon world. songs gentle enough to fall asleep to, mellow enough for slow play, and pleasant enough that you won't lose your mind by track four.
✿ no streaming links yet — i'll add spotify / youtube links to each as i find them. for now, just search the song + artist.
sleep & wind-down
- Rainbow Connection — Kermit / Sarah McLachlan cover
slow, warm, sentimental. our 'lights are about to go out' song.
- Somewhere Over the Rainbow — Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
the ukulele version. it lowers the whole room's heart rate.
- Edelweiss — Sound of Music
the original, soft and unhurried.
- Hush Little Baby (slow versions)
search for acoustic covers, not the high-pitched kids ones.
- Twinkle Twinkle (slow piano cover)
the calm version, not the kids-tv tempo.
- Moon River — Audrey Hepburn
we play it during the wind-down hour. unbeatable.
- Rockabye Baby! — Lullaby Renditions (Coldplay, Beatles, Radiohead)
entire albums of music-box lullaby covers of grown-up music. genuinely lovely.
- Sleep Sound in Jesus — Michael Card
soft acoustic, even if you're not religious. just a beautiful album.
- Goodnight, My Someone — Music Man
lyrical, slow, a real lullaby.
slow play & calm time
- Three Little Birds — Bob Marley
toddler-safe, parent-approved. don't worry about a thing.
- Mr Rogers' Neighborhood / Daniel Tiger soundtrack
easily the gentlest kids-TV music out there.
- Elizabeth Mitchell — You Are My Little Bird
folk for kids. her whole catalog is the secret weapon of cool toddler parents.
- Lisa Loeb — Catch the Moon (and other children's albums)
indie singer-songwriter doing kids music. melodic, not loud.
- Caspar Babypants
Chris Ballew (the Presidents of the USA) writes kids music now. weird, sweet, mellow.
- Putumayo Kids — World Playground / Reggae Playground
curated world music for kids. relaxing, never grating.
in the car
- Acoustic kids playlists on Spotify
search 'acoustic kids' or 'kids music for parents'. usually safe.
- Skinnamarink — Sharon, Lois & Bram
i grew up on this. weirdly comforting.
- Raffi — Down by the Bay, Baby Beluga
the canon. gentle, repeatable.
- Wheels on the Bus — slow versions ONLY
the fast tv ones make everyone tired. seek out the acoustic / folk renditions.
- Old Town Road (clean) — Lil Nas X
a guilty toddler bop that won't make you scream. ymmv.
bath & happy mornings
- Bluey theme — Joff Bush
sweet, short, doesn't loop in your head all day. aru's request.
- Caspar Babypants — Run Baby Run
playful but not chaotic. perfect bath energy.
- Vampire Weekend (clean tracks)
for the parents who need something for them too. surprisingly toddler-friendly.
- Jack Johnson — Curious George soundtrack
low-key, sunny, easy to live with.
songs we (carefully) avoid
- Baby Shark
ear-worm of nightmares. once it's in, it's in for a week.
- Cocomelon
too fast, too loud, dopamine-hit-y. aru is calmer when we skip it.
- Most autotuned kids-YouTube channels
you'll know them when you hear them. it's exhausting.
- Anything you can hear at full volume in target
if it makes you tense in a store, it'll do worse to a sleepy toddler.
